trauma-focused psychotherapy

Witnessing Violence or Suffering?

Our trauma-focused psychotherapy is tailored to help you process and recover from traumatic experiences. Using advanced techniques such as: Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR), Brain-Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT), Polyvagal Therapy (PVT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioural therapy (DBT), we work with you to address and alleviate the impact of trauma on your life.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing  - EMDR

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, is highly effective for treating trauma and PTSD. It employs bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or tapping, to help reprocess traumatic memories.

EMDR follows an eight-phase approach, ensuring a comprehensive treatment process that includes history-taking, preparation, desensitization, and reevaluation. This therapy aims to integrate traumatic memories into the brain's adaptive memory network, reducing emotional distress and fostering positive self-beliefs.

Benefits:

  • Highly effective for processing and integrating traumatic memories.
  • Uses eye movements or other techniques to facilitate natural healing and reduce distress.
  • Ensures thorough treatment through an eight-phase structure addressing all trauma aspects.
  • Reprocesses memories adaptively, reducing distress and fostering positive beliefs.

Brain-Working Recursive Therapy - BWRT

Brain-Working Recursive Therapy - BWRT

BWRT

Brain-Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT)

Brain-Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT), developed by Terence Watts in 2011, leverages the latest neuroscience to create rapid and effective change by directly engaging the subconscious mind. It targets distressing brain response patterns, such as those causing anxiety or phobias, and modifies them to establish healthier responses.

Designed with high privacy in mind, BWRT requires minimal personal disclosure, making it ideal for clients uncomfortable with discussing their issues in detail. The therapy uses a recursive process to repeatedly address problematic thoughts until they are resolved.

Benefits:

  • Fast symptom relief by engaging the subconscious mind.
  • Effectively treats anxiety and phobias by modifying distressing brain patterns.
  • Minimal client disclosure required, ideal for those uncomfortable sharing details.
  • Treats trauma and postpartum depression.

Polyvagal Therapy - PVT

Polyvagal Therapy - PVT

PVT

Polyvagal Therapy (PVT)

Polyvagal therapy works with the vagal nerve, teaches clients how to calm themselves and with regular use, can reduce overall anxiety, allows the client to increase  their recognition of the body's signals, enabling them to incorporate their coping techniques earlier and more effectively.

The polyvagal concept was borne out of the research of Dr. Stephen Porges and the therapy was developed by clinician Deb Dana. This therapy focuses on the role of the Vagas nerve and how it reads and responds to signals from both the outside environment and the internal environment.  We also incorporate a feedback method created by the Heartmath Institute* so the client can see in real time, how they are affecting their internal systems while simply breathing.

Benefits:

  • Provides the client with very effective coping skills and the ability to lower overall anxiety both short and long-term.
  • Increased self-compassion
  • Effective in interpersonal relationships as the client is less emotionally reactive
  • Builds resilience.
Heartmath is a registered business and is in no way affiliated with Saltmarsh Counselling. For more information go to https://www.heartmath.org/

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), developed by Aaron Beck in the 1960s, focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours. It is based on the concept that thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected.

Structured and goal-oriented, CBT involves practical exercises and homework to help clients apply learned skills in daily life. It is effective for a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, phobias, and substance abuse, and is supported by extensive research validating its effectiveness.

Benefits:

  • Breaks negative cycles by linking thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
  • Provides a clear, measurable progress approach with goals and homework.
  • Equips clients to challenge and replace dysfunctional thoughts for long-term change.
  • Effective for various mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy - DBT

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy - DBT

DBT

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a specialized and structured form of cognitive behavioural therapy developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s. It is designed to help individuals who experience intense emotional responses, often leading to self-destructive behaviours.

DBT combines traditional cognitive-behavioural techniques with concepts of mindfulness and acceptance derived from Buddhist practices. This therapy is particularly effective for individuals with borderline personality disorder, severe anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and those struggling with self-harm or suicidal behaviours.

DBT focuses on teaching clients practical skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Benefits:

  • Learn to manage and regulate intense emotions
  • Develop healthy coping strategies
  • Improve interpersonal relationships and communication skills
  • Reduce self-destructive behaviours
